New Year’s Priorities

look back

The beginning of a new year (or the end of an old one) is always a great time to reflect on one’s current situation, reassess life, and re-prioritize for the next year. For me, the holidays is the worst time to try to accomplish any of this.  My husband and I live overseas. (I’ve been […]

5 Life Lessons Learned on Bike

2013-01-23 06.18.37

Cycling is a great metaphor for life.  Actually, any athletic endeavor works metaphorically here, especially if it is one that requires commitment, endurance, and patience in order to improve. I, however, am most passionate about cycling, so I’m choosing the bike to help me illustrate some life lessons these days. This last week, was a […]

Even A Bad Day on the Bike…

sunsetwheel

Lately, I’ve been struck with the realization that life changes on a dime. Okay, so, it isn’t really lately that I’ve become aware of this. I’ve been noticing this for quite a few years now. I think it is something like twenty. Ernest Hemingway in, The Sun Also Rises, penned these words: “How did you […]

Cycling from Central Point to Rogue R...

Gold Hill Sign

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine on Facebook mentioned that he was trying to ride from Central Point to Gold Hill, but he was deterred by the hills. This challenged me to try to find a way to ride to Gold Hill, that wasn’t hilly, if indeed there was any such route. I’ve […]

This One’s For My Family, Espec...

Breast Cancer runs in my family…sort of. My mother, at 56, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She also had an uncle who died of breast cancer, a rare but possible thing, as breast cancer can affect 2% of all men. At least, I think that is number I remember reading in my journeys the last […]

The Way To Start A Week

I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a brief couple of years in the early ’90’s.  During that time I fell in love with the Southwest and with Byrd Baylor’s books, The Way To Start A Day, being one of my favorites.  This last weekend, due to school budget cuts, ended up being a three-day weekend.  Since […]

New Year’s Resolutions, Revised

I’m a great one for setting goals and New Year’s Resolutions are no exception.  Back in the day, I’d write them down making sure they were measurable and achievable.  Most of the time, back in the day, I was able to realize all  these goals I so dutifully recorded.  Things sure have changed. Oh, I still […]

Cycling In Portland,Oregon

Recently, Huffington Post carried an article about the 20 Most Bike-Friendly cities in the U.S..  They pulled their information from Bicycling.com’s list of America’s Top 50 Bike Cities. I was very pleased to note that Portland, Oregon placed second on this esteemed list of bike friendly cities. If you have ever had the opportunity to […]

Facing Fear…In Small Increments

Facing Fear…In Small Increments

I’m sitting out on my back deck watching my two youngest children swimming with the son of one of my friends. It is the first year in the last three that my pool has stayed clear without having to dump hundreds of dollars of chemicals into it and hours of labor. The difference this year? […]

Blogger on Bike

Hi, I'm Cat A.Olson, @According2Cat on Twitter, or @TheDigitalCat on Instagram, and I write about my cycling adventures. In 2010, after 25 years off the bike, I decided to get a bike and start riding again. In 2012, I was diagnosed with DCIS, an early and completely curable form of breast cancer. I had five weeks of radiation treatment and I rode my bike to nearly every treatment. In 2013, I decided to get a faster bike. I'm finally getting serious about losing weight, and riding really fast with the cool kids.

I ride every chance I get, as fast as I can, for as long as my body will allow. I'm learning how to embrace challenges like helmet hair, padded pants, clipless shoes, flat tires, bugs in my teeth, and...ugh...hills. I'm learning that both cycling and life are easier and a lot more fun when you're in the right gear.
