5 Life Lessons Learned on Bike

2013-01-23 06.18.37

Cycling is a great metaphor for life.  Actually, any athletic endeavor works metaphorically here, especially if it is one that requires commitment, endurance, and patience in order to improve. I, however, am most passionate about cycling, so I’m choosing the bike to help me illustrate some life lessons these days. This last week, was a […]

Even A Bad Day on the Bike…

sunsetwheel

Lately, I’ve been struck with the realization that life changes on a dime. Okay, so, it isn’t really lately that I’ve become aware of this. I’ve been noticing this for quite a few years now. I think it is something like twenty. Ernest Hemingway in, The Sun Also Rises, penned these words: “How did you […]

Cycling from Central Point to Rogue R...

Gold Hill Sign

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine on Facebook mentioned that he was trying to ride from Central Point to Gold Hill, but he was deterred by the hills. This challenged me to try to find a way to ride to Gold Hill, that wasn’t hilly, if indeed there was any such route. I’ve […]

No Fun

Two miles of hot, dusty gravel road. One mile, at least but it felt like much more, not riding my bike, but forcing it up the hill beside me. We weren’t even five miles into our ride and I was experiencing a new “first”. I was not having fun. My cyclometer wasnt recording my mileage. […]

No Two Rides Are The Same

One of the things I love about Southern Oregon is the mild winter weather. On one of these delightful weekends, the weather was warm, reaching the low 60’s at times. I took advantage of this wonderful winter climate and managed to log 63 miles on the Fun Wheels. We normally spend our time on the […]

Slowly Getting Back in the Saddle

As much fun as the surgical party was, the time spent convalescing wasn’t nearly as smooth this time around.  More pain, more fatigue, less weather that cooperated with me getting out on the bike, and more of the daily stuff of life that can just get in the way of feeling 100 percent.  That being […]

New Year’s Resolutions, Revised

I’m a great one for setting goals and New Year’s Resolutions are no exception.  Back in the day, I’d write them down making sure they were measurable and achievable.  Most of the time, back in the day, I was able to realize all  these goals I so dutifully recorded.  Things sure have changed. Oh, I still […]

Crashing

Over the years, I’ve been involved in a couple of car accidents and several cycling accidents.  From the time I wrecked a friend’s car in high school because I wasn’t wearing corrective lenses because it was before I was diagnosed with needing them, to the several fender benders I’ve had in my own vehicles over […]

Not Just Another Auld Lang Syne

New Years Eve 004

How does one look back on a year such as mine?  Three years ago, I ventured out into one of the scariest places I think I’ve ever been.  Post divorce, 40-something, straddled with debt that wasn’t all mine, looking forward to fewer years to earn back the losses than I had behind me.  While many […]

Hi, I'm Cat A.Olson, @According2Cat on Twitter, or @TheDigitalCat on Instagram, and I write about my cycling adventures. In 2010, after 25 years off the bike, I decided to get a bike and start riding again. In 2012, I was diagnosed with DCIS, an early and completely curable form of breast cancer. I had five weeks of radiation treatment and I rode my bike to nearly every treatment. In 2013, I decided to get a faster bike. I'm finally getting serious about losing weight, and riding really fast with the cool kids.

I ride every chance I get, as fast as I can, for as long as my body will allow. I'm learning how to embrace challenges like helmet hair, padded pants, clipless shoes, flat tires, bugs in my teeth, and...ugh...hills. I'm learning that both cycling and life are easier and a lot more fun when you're in the right gear.
