New Year’s Priorities

look back

The beginning of a new year (or the end of an old one) is always a great time to reflect on one’s current situation, reassess life, and re-prioritize for the next year. For me, the holidays is the worst time to try to accomplish any of this.  My husband and I live overseas. (I’ve been […]

The 100 Days Challenge

20130220-211816.jpg

I am not a morning person. I never have been. I’ve learned to cope with a world that believes the morning person is the ideal, but if I had my preferences, work would begin at 10:00 instead of 7:30 in the morning. Even 8:00 is a vast improvement in terms of my morning routine. This […]

Even A Bad Day on the Bike…

sunsetwheel

Lately, I’ve been struck with the realization that life changes on a dime. Okay, so, it isn’t really lately that I’ve become aware of this. I’ve been noticing this for quite a few years now. I think it is something like twenty. Ernest Hemingway in, The Sun Also Rises, penned these words: “How did you […]

No Fun

Two miles of hot, dusty gravel road. One mile, at least but it felt like much more, not riding my bike, but forcing it up the hill beside me. We weren’t even five miles into our ride and I was experiencing a new “first”. I was not having fun. My cyclometer wasnt recording my mileage. […]

A 100-Mile Weekend

wintermorninglight

The first weekend in April was a three day weekend for me due to a school reduction day. It was also projected to be very nice weather so Saturday morning the SO and I were rolling out by 10:30. I had a plan in mind. I wanted to try to ride a hundred miles in […]

A Windy Saturday in March

It was shaping up to be a disappointing Saturday.  Face it, during the school year, for a teacher, the best and most wonderful day to ride is Saturday, weather permitting.  Sunday rides have to be shortened due to getting ready for the week.  Rides during the week must be shortened due to running out of […]

The Way To Start A Week

I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a brief couple of years in the early ’90’s.  During that time I fell in love with the Southwest and with Byrd Baylor’s books, The Way To Start A Day, being one of my favorites.  This last weekend, due to school budget cuts, ended up being a three-day weekend.  Since […]

Not Just Another Auld Lang Syne

New Years Eve 004

How does one look back on a year such as mine?  Three years ago, I ventured out into one of the scariest places I think I’ve ever been.  Post divorce, 40-something, straddled with debt that wasn’t all mine, looking forward to fewer years to earn back the losses than I had behind me.  While many […]

How It All Started

j0442390

It goes way back.  Funny how that is, isn’t it?  The stories we begin in the present often have their origins in the past.  For me, this story begins way back, as a teenager, still living at home.  I can still hear my mother saying the words that she said all during my high […]

Blogger on Bike

1

Hi, I'm Cat A.Olson, @According2Cat on Twitter, or @TheDigitalCat on Instagram, and I write about my cycling adventures. In 2010, after 25 years off the bike, I decided to get a bike and start riding again. In 2012, I was diagnosed with DCIS, an early and completely curable form of breast cancer. I had five weeks of radiation treatment and I rode my bike to nearly every treatment. In 2013, I decided to get a faster bike. I'm finally getting serious about losing weight, and riding really fast with the cool kids.

I ride every chance I get, as fast as I can, for as long as my body will allow. I'm learning how to embrace challenges like helmet hair, padded pants, clipless shoes, flat tires, bugs in my teeth, and...ugh...hills. I'm learning that both cycling and life are easier and a lot more fun when you're in the right gear.
