Good-bye Summer

20130820-131211.jpg

Three years ago, I started out on this cycling adventure after being off the bike for almost thirty years. A year and a half ago, with my 50th birthday looming, I decided to finally drop the residual baby fat from my last pregancy (12 years ago) and get in shape. My goal, back then, was […]

Hills Are Your Friend

20130626-213018.jpg

There I was on a group ride that was beyond my ability level. I was the only woman in a group of “old guys”. Never mind that most of these “old guys” were flying on two wheels faster than I have the courage to go at this point. Never mind that they were flying on […]

5 Life Lessons Learned on Bike

2013-01-23 06.18.37

Cycling is a great metaphor for life. ¬†Actually, any athletic endeavor works metaphorically here, especially if it is one that requires commitment, endurance, and patience in order to improve. I, however, am most passionate about cycling, so I’m choosing the bike to help me illustrate some life lessons these days. This last week, was a […]

Kismet

20130620-202050.jpg

Kismet. It means fate; destiny. Today was Kismet. Spontaneous. Unplanned. Unexpected. Overwhelmingly beautiful. Every minute of it a private birthday gift to me, unwrapped and revealing a new and completely unanticipated surprise. A 51st birthday, could not have been better, had I orchestrated it myself, detail by detail. In cycling, I’ve learned, especially when dealing […]

Taking Risks

20130614-171239.jpg

There are times when you just have to take that little risk, if you want to move forward in life. I have been a dues-paying, card-carrying member of the Siskiyou Velo Club for the last two years. The benefits of club membership are many, especially if you’re a new cyclist starting out. One of the […]

All’s Well That Ends Well

20130610-212823.jpg

This last weekend didn’t start out so great on the cycling front. It’s been a month since I’ve been able to get out on my bike; my schedule’s been crazy. I’d looked forward all week to getting up early and heading out on bike for a few hours before the heat set in. With temperatures […]

Back in the Saddle…Finally

20130504-164106.jpg

It’s been six weeks since I spent some serious time on my new bike, even longer since I’ve written about it. So, let’s just take a minute and bring everyone up to speed on the new bike and reasons why I haven’t been riding as much in spite of the gorgeous weather. First off, the […]

Anticipation

20130310-194754.jpg

Do you remember those days when you were a child and the night before Christmas was excruciating as you waited in anticipation for Christmas Day and whatever goodies you might discover under the tree? I remember loving to hate those Christmas Eves. I’d stay awake as long as I could, with excitement. But I always […]

Going Shopping

20130301-225815.jpg

The other day a friend of mine posted some things on Facebook. These “things” were cute little outfits which will beautifully adorn her cute, petite body. There were pictures of dresses, skirts, boots, sandals and off the shoulder blouses. For a very brief moment, I wished I’d been a bit more committed to my weight […]

Cycling: It’s What’s for ...

20130127-001414.jpg

I’ve been sick for the last few days. Out of nowhere, it hit. I went to work Thursday, like any normal Thursday, but within a few minutes of arriving at work, I knew this was not going to be something I could work through. An hour later, I was headed home. Two days later, and […]

You Got This!

20130123-180833.jpg

I’ve never been a fan of hills. To me, they are the vegetables of cycling. I need to try them. I need to take them on if I’m ever going to get stronger as a cyclist, but they are not enjoyable to me. It’s no wonder, either. I’m packing around 40-45 pounds more than I […]

Winter Riding

20130123-161736.jpg

The weekend of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was a beautiful weekend. Perfect for riding in Southern Oregon. Well, almost perfect. The temps were in the mid-30’s, and on Monday, the weather reached a balmy 43 degrees. Clear, blue skies, sunny. Cold. Just the kind of weather to ride in if you have the appropriate […]

Blogger on Bike

Hi, I'm Cat A.Olson, @According2Cat on Twitter, or @TheDigitalCat on Instagram, and I write about my cycling adventures. In 2010, after 25 years off the bike, I decided to get a bike and start riding again. In 2012, I was diagnosed with DCIS, an early and completely curable form of breast cancer. I had five weeks of radiation treatment and I rode my bike to nearly every treatment. In 2013, I decided to get a faster bike. I'm finally getting serious about losing weight, and riding really fast with the cool kids.

I ride every chance I get, as fast as I can, for as long as my body will allow. I'm learning how to embrace challenges like helmet hair, padded pants, clipless shoes, flat tires, bugs in my teeth, and...ugh...hills. I'm learning that both cycling and life are easier and a lot more fun when you're in the right gear.
